Himes Publications
Joshua V. Himes was the organizational mastermind behind William Miller and the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s. By redirecting Miller from the rural northeastern United States Himes catapulted Miller’s message to the forefront of public discussion. Combining this strategy with a massive publishing program of periodicals in the cities where Miller was to lecture, pamphlets, tracts, and books Himes established the framework for promulgating the message of that movement.
In respect for the publishing acumen of Joshua V. Himes, Dr. David A. Dean established Himes Publications in the late 1970s to publish his own works as well as reprint classic Advent Christian books. He generated more of the former than the latter. Books he wrote include: On Giant’s Shoulders, Framing the Prophetic Puzzle, Don’t Drink the Water, and Good Grief. The lone reprint After the Verdict shared H. L. Hastings classic conditional book Pauline Theology to a new generation of readers. Dr. Dean also permitted his son, David, to self-publish a memoir Philippine Reflections, coauthored with his wife, Melodie, and a fiction book for children, There’s a Dragon in My Bedroom under the Himes umbrella. The cessation of campus operations for Berkshire Christian College and Dr. Dean’s increasing responsibilities in establishing the Berkshire professorship at Gordon-Conwell Seminary, followed by short-term mission service in India, The Philippines, Japan and Mexico, and his authorship of Who Will Go For Us? a 438 page history of Advent Christian mission, prevented Dr. Dean from fully utilizing Himes Publications priro to his death in 2015.
In 2020 David E. Dean reestablished Himes Publications with this three-fold mission:
- Compile and print the collected works of David A. Dean.
- Reprint classis Advent Christian books.
- Print new books which challenge the mind, cultivate the heart, and stimulate the imagination
One major upcoming project is compiling a Festschrift for Dr. David Arnold Dean. The volume entitled Limits of Understanding, Limits of Faith is planned for publication in the first quarter of 2022.
